The Warneford Models
These two Warneford models were kindly donated to the Horsham Museum, by Peter Shearer, after he saw the Model Flying Exhibition.
The Nipper and the Moth were ready-to-fly aeroplanes sold by high class toyshops during the nineteen-thirties, making the models pictured at least 65 years old. Both models are in remarkably good condition, complete with the original instruction sheets. Construction is of spruce, wire and oiled silk. The green Nipper has a wingspan of 15 inchs and weighs one ounce. The Moth is larger, at 18 inch span and weighs a trifle under 2 ounces.
These models feature the unique Warneford prop/undercart assembly which hinges backwards.
The wing is detachable, being held by metal rings, which also allow fore and aft wing adjustment. The tailplane and fin has a wire outline, the fin having a wire prong plugging into the rear of the fuselage. Thus the model can easily be packed back
into its box.
Plans of both models have been drawn up by Cedric dela Nougerede.
CADMAC Replica Nipper
Inspired by viewing the original Warneford models, CADMAC member Peter Cameron recreated a model from his youth, The Nipper. It has captured the spirit of the original, complete with its own carrying box, see picture below.
